A Welsh friend pointed me to this site. I'm from the USA and while I have minimal understanding of Wales and the political situation there, I have 37 years as a professional psychologist and sometime anthropologist. I recognise this behaviour. These people are self-haters. They have some sort of inferiority complex about their own identity. I have witnessed this amongst peoples across the globe from Native Americans in South America to South Pacific Islanders, but never first world Europeans or their decedents elsewhere. However interesting a phenomenon, it is tragically, toe-curlingly embarrassing to witness. Moreover, not producing electoral material in the first language of the majority is political suicide. Perhaps you guys should not encourage them to do so! Pob Lwc

    Hi Anonymous,

While you have minimal understanding of Wales and the political situation here, perhaps it would be wise to not spout your opinions about matters you have no awareness of.

Psychologically, it says a lot about you that you wish to comment on things you know nothing about. Maybe a deep rooted craving for a pat on the head because mother didn't love you? Anthropologically, unfortunately you reinforce the negative stereotype of the highly opinionated yet under-informed person "from the USofA", a toe-curling embarrasment to your fellow Americans who know when to shut up when they don't know what they're talking about.

  5. Anon 2:30am has us well and truly sussed. We are indeed, sadly, a nation of self-haters, which is beautifully illustrated by the exchange in the screenshot above. This perverse attitude towards our own language is endemic and the perpetrators are oblivious that there is anything amiss. It would be a very safe bet that anon 2:30am is infinitely better informed than your sorry self A Jones. Either your reply is intended to be tongue in cheek and ironic and you just forgot to add the winking smiley on the end, or you have inadvertently confirmed anon 2:30am's observations - like a prize idiot.

I don't think we are a "nation of self haters" but there are certainly many amongst us who do display the traits our American friend identifies. This is obvious from the frankly cringe-making exchange in the screen shot.
